Refurbishment and expansion of the retail area

The new station building that opened in 1958 was designed by Helmuth Conradi (1903–1973), the architect also responsible for the entrance building at the main railway station in Heidelberg (opened in 1955). The entrance hall is the defining feature. It opens up to the station forecourt with a continuous glass façade that extends from the floor all the way to the eaves. A very thin canopy marks the main entrance; its cladding with gold-anodised aluminium panels is a nod to the significance of the watch and jewellery industry to Pforzheim. Inside the building, ceiling strips that continue along the back wall provide indirect lighting. Two walls with a granite surface frame the hall. Considered “one of the most elegant and modern station buildings of the German federal railway”, the building was accorded listed status in 1989.
