Library at the Schäfersee Berlin

Energy refurbishment of the library at Schäfersee in Reinickendorf. 

In 2017 and 2018, an energy refurbishment concept was drawn up for the Bibliothek am Schäfersee (Reinickendorf – east district library). Particular consideration was given to the listed value of the building. The aim is to achieve the greatest possible energy efficiency after the renovation measures and to take equal account of monument preservation and building physics aspects; BUSSE & PARTNER was commissioned with the project management. In addition, accessibility is to be achieved.

The expert report forms the basis for the planned modernisation of the building envelope. The project is to be financed with funds from the Active Centre, from the Berlin Programme for Sustainable Development (BENE) and from the district’s own funds.

The former Reinickendorf public library was built in 1962 in the style of post-war modernism. The building, originally constructed exclusively as a library with library administration and bookbinding, now only houses the district library on the ground floor. The upper floor is used by the adult education centre. There are classrooms as well as a dance and exercise room. Due to its multiple use, the library enjoys great popularity and is thus also an important (meeting) point in the neighbourhood. The building should therefore continue to be used with its existing functions and diverse offerings. Therefore, a comprehensive and at the same time monument-friendly renovation of the building is important.

It is planned to make the building barrier-free up to the upper floor. This includes step-free access from the street as well as the installation of a lift to the upper floor.
