Berlin Natural History Museum
– second construction phase

The second construction phase of the core project focused on renovation of the various collection rooms and the newly created offices, laboratory workplaces and storage, service and technical areas located on the top floor.

The palaeontological collections (including the historical wood and glass furniture) will be housed on the ground and first floors of the east main building.

The wooden drawer cabinets with glazed display cases located in the main collection hall and the steel and glass display cases in the bridge hall will be retained. The missing furniture elements will be supplemented from the museum’s inventory and partially reconstructed.

On the first floor of the east main building, the steel and glass display cases in the taxidermy hall will be removed and their individual parts used to renovate the display cases being retained. A modern collection storage system will be installed in the hall consisting of tightly sealed steel cabinets that extend over the entire 6-metre room height. A new collection storage system is also planned for the antler hall on the second floor of the east wing. It consists of floor-to-ceiling wall elements on which the antlers can be mounted.

One particularity of this project: the mounting of exhibits in the exhibition areas refurbished entirely in accordance with the listed building requirements and now affording modernised building technology. The project costs totalled € 30 million.
